When the Alegria era came to an end, Facebook (now Meta) returned to BUCK to develop a new illustration system ostensibly addressing the same need as its predecessor: bring a human element to the platform and its communications.

Where Alegria took a broad approach to achieving inclusivity, the Meta Illustration System embraces the individual — honoring real people’s real perspectives and experiences. This means real skin tones, open compositions with a definitively human-centric hierarchy, and a more naturalistic style that invites variation from illustrators’ hands.
